SEAN

Twenty-seven years ago.

Staying late at the lab isn’t really like me. I’m usually out the door by five, home by five-thirty, and eating dinner and watching a movie with the wife by seven. Sometimes we go out, hang out with Jonathan and Alicia or some of my wife’s friends. Unlike Jonathan, I make sure I have plenty of time for the rest of my life, refusing to make this place my whole world. I don’t even have kids, and I manage a work and home life balance better than he does.

I mean, he’s not that bad. Not yet at least.

Tonight was special though. I was working on a personal project. Well, Jonathan was technically the one to bring it to my attention a few months back, but I’ve been doing some research on it on my own time since we never officially started anything.

It’s nearly seven already. I let Holly know I was going to be late tonight, but I don’t think she cared all that much. We had a pretty big fight last night. I may have thrown some things…

A few minutes after seven, I finally shut everything down in the lab I’ve been working in. As I’m heading down the hall to leave the building, I hear a loud racket coming from a few rooms ahead. I quicken my pace, and the noises grow louder, a frenzied clamor, metal on metal, glass shattering. And screaming.

When I reach the room it’s all coming from, I get to witness the source.

Jonathan is inside the lab, and he’s absolutely losing his shit.

As I suspected, fragments of glass equipment litter the floor like a blanket of sharp diamonds. Other equipment has been thrown about, most of it lay broken in pieces too.

And he’s still throwing shit.

And screaming.

And…crying.

When was the last time I saw Jonathan Copeland cry? I literally can’t remember. The day he married Alicia twelve years ago maybe? I don’t think I even saw him cry the day Harrison was born.

He hasn’t seen me yet, but I need him to. I need him to stop because he’s kind of scaring the shit out of me.

“Jon!”

He whips his head around to where I’m standing in the open doorway. His dark hair that’s usually perfectly styled is all in disarray. His eyes and nose are red and puffy. Fresh tears leave tracks down his cheeks. The top few buttons of his wrinkled dress shirt are open and the sleeves rolled up. He looks a little crazed but mostly distraught.

Then I notice blood on his hand, like he cut himself on some glass. Crimson droplets spill from his palm onto the white tile.

“What happened?” I ask, keeping my voice soft and my steps forward slow and cautious.

His voice breaks, pained and raw, when he answers, “It’s cancer.”

It takes me about half a second to realize what he means, who he’s talking about.

Alicia’s been sick for weeks…

“Fuck. You mean…”

“Alicia,” he confirms, sounding as though his throat is fucking bleeding worse than his hand. “They gave her the diagnosis today.
